Question?

How will I know the drivers will read the manual, really learn from it, review it and retain the information? Am I getting my money's worth and more?

The answer involves several things;

The first part is to introduce the manual to your drivers for them to read and learn. The reasons for using a training manual can be many and you may have your own reasons. Some reasons can be;

  • You want your drivers to be the best trained drivers.
  • Other trucking companies have had problems and you want to avoid those kinds of problems.
  • Your company has had problems and you want to turn things around.
Note: You may have some drivers that are not good readers and will just not read anything. You probably already know who they are. These drivers will require more "one on one" mini meetings in order cover items faster. Don't leave them out. This is your safety program, your equipment, your insurance rates, your DOT safety ratings, your profit, your company, etc.

All drivers are at their own level of experience and knowledge. You want everyone to be at the same level with knowledge. Experience will follow. The idea is to have the whole fleet operating as efficiently and safely as possible.

For the more experienced drivers, give them a heads up about the training manual and ask them for feed back on the manual. If they learn something new, well, that's a good thing. For positive feed back, use that for the newer drivers.

With the use of the test, you and your drivers will know the extent of their knowledge of the subject. This is good because the drivers will have a measurement for themselves. The test is just a way to show if there are any unknown problem areas that need more attention.

Note: Leadership is everything! You read the manual and take the test with them! Show'em! Lead by example!

Secondly, in safety meetings, have safety topics come from the training manual. There are many, many topics to choose from. When a topic is covered, use visual aids such as a white or chalk board, handouts, overhead projector, etc. These are aids that can make the topic more easily understood and interesting. At the end of the discussion of a topic, mention that this is covered in the training manual on page whatever. Of course, there will be issues from your own operations that will come up that need to be covered, also.

Third, always encourage the drivers to review the manual when they have time. Such as waiting to load, tire repair, etc. Encourage the use of the paper clip method. When a driver is reading and needs to stop, paper clip the page and make a mark where they stopped at. They will know where to start at the next time. The manual is designed to be easy to pick up, read about a few items and put it down. It's easy to hold due the spiral binding.

Forth, all administrative people (dispatchers, driver supervisor, shop supervisor and safety person) that the drivers are in contact with on a regular basis should have a copy visibly, laying around the desk for the drivers to see. Have them all read it. This is showing that the administrative people see the importance of safety.

We are talking about your fleet safety program. Everything mentioned above is really simple. It just takes a little effort and leadership to get it going. That's all.

Continue using, talking about and displaying the manual all the time. If you just buy the manual, talk about it once or twice and then forget about it, your drivers will do the same thing. They will forget about it. You've got to lead them and encourage them.
